A 40-year-old Indian national was set to appear before the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 18 February 2025, after being arrested for allegedly being in possession of illicit cigarettes.
According to the South African Police Service (Saps), Middelburg Crime Prevention officers arrested the suspect after receiving information that illicit cigarettes were being stored at his shop. Upon investigation, authorities recovered illicit cigarettes with an estimated value of R3.4 million.
The illicit cigarettes suspect’s immigration status
The Hawks’ Middelburg-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit and South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs were called in to assist with further investigations. Additionally, the Department of Home Affairs was expected to determine the suspect’s immigration status in South Africa.
The seized cigarettes were booked in as evidence, and officials warned that such products not only pose health risks but also harm the economy. Major General Nico Gerber, Mpumalanga Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, cautioned the public against using illicit cigarettes.
“These cigarettes contain harmful substances, including high levels of tar, nicotine, and other toxic chemicals. If smuggled into the country, they negatively impact the economy as smugglers evade taxes and regulations,” said Gerber.
Authorities have intensified efforts to combat the illegal trade, which remains a significant challenge in South Africa. The suspect’s scheduled court appearance was expected to provide further insight into the extent of his involvement in the illicit trade.
