The ever-evolving, SAMA-nominated James Deacon is back with a brand-new single, Same Old, now available on all major streaming platforms—and this time, it hits differently.

The track came together in just one studio session with his longtime collaborator Paul Gala, capturing a lightning-in-a-bottle moment of creativity. For James, it’s more than just another release. He calls it “the best thing I have ever made, this is really me”.

Known for moving seamlessly between genres and experimenting with different sounds, James has never liked to be boxed in. But with Same Old, he feels he’s finally tapped into something that fully represents who he is as an artist—a sound that feels authentic, confident, and entirely his own.

Inspiration behind Same Old

Reflecting on the inspiration behind the track, James Deacon opened up about the personal journey that shaped the song.

“I have experimented a lot in the last few years just to push myself as much as I can creatively and as a songwriter. I have struggled to feel like I really have a consistent identity as an artist because my taste changes so much. The truth is, I make whatever music I want to in the moment,” said James.

Life, love, and the cycles that bind us

Continuing his thoughts on the track, James Deacon explains that, at its core, the song’s lyrics explore life as a series of repeating cycles.

“Good, bad, meaningful, meaningless. Life is basically just a fight – a kind of dance between ups and downs,”.

The single also touches on the emotional turbulence of clashing with someone you love, adding a raw and relatable layer to its message.

“Sometimes fighting with someone you love can be like a microcosmic representation of the cycle of existence. A push and pull between forces that eventually ends in the same old result,” said James.

A personal touch

Compared to his previous releases, Same Old draws heavily from the sounds and moments that first made James Deacon fall in love with music, giving it a deeply personal and nostalgic touch.

“This song had so much emotion that I really took the time to write because it means something to me,”.

James takes it a step further, revealing that he played much of the violin on the track himself.

“That’s the instrument that first triggered my love for music back when I was 4 years old. It felt like a full-circle moment,” said James.

Breaking boundaries

Often told that his genre-hopping and eclectic sound might hold him back, James Deacon refuses to be boxed in, embracing his versatility as his signature strength.

“The freedom for me to make whatever music I want in the moment is why I love what I do, and why I love the team around me. I let the music happen,”.

That same fearless approach carries over to what fans can expect from James in the near future.

“We will see how it goes. I have a few more tracks in the works that may form part of a greater EP, but I really just take it song by song,” said James.
