Teenager jailed for 16 years after fatal stabbing crime in Kimberley

Kimberley’s Carnarvon Regional Court has sentenced a 19-year-old man to 16 years in prison for a violent crime that left one man dead and another victim injured.

Byrone Maritz was convicted of the murder of Henry Williams, 40, and the assault of Williams’ girlfriend. The crime occurred in the early hours of 27 July 2024, when the three were drinking together, and an argument escalated. Maritz fatally stabbed Williams before attacking his girlfriend.

After his arrest, Maritz was charged with murder and assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm. His sentencing on 18 February 2025 marks the conclusion of a thorough investigation led by Detective Constable Shanton Thompson.

Authorities praised the detective’s dedication in securing a conviction, highlighting the importance of swift justice in violent crime cases. The South African Police Service (Saps) urged the community to report criminal activities and remain vigilant against escalating violence.

This crime has again raised concerns about alcohol-related violence in the region. Law enforcement continues to work towards reducing such offences and ensuring that criminals face justice.

The successful prosecution of Maritz underscores the commitment of authorities to holding perpetrators accountable. As crime remains a serious issue, the Saps reassured the public of their ongoing efforts to tackle violent offences across Northern Cape.
