A gang of cash-in-transit robbers has been sentenced to lengthy prison terms after a daring heist in Boksburg. The sentences, ranging from 36 to 40 years, underscore the severity of their crimes and serve as a stark warning to potential offenders.
The incident occurred on 17th May 2018, when three G4S vehicles departed from their Boksburg depot en route to Absa Bank in Spartan to deposit a substantial amount of cash. As the armoured vehicles traversed Atlas Road, they were ambushed by armed assailants wielding fully automatic firearms. The robbers employed explosives to forcefully breach the vehicles, seizing cash bags and firearms from security personnel.
A swift response by law enforcement agencies, including the Johannesburg Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police (EMPD), ensued. A coordinated effort led to the arrest of multiple suspects and the recovery of stolen money, firearms, and ammunition.
The convicted individuals, identified as Paul Sibanda (56), Thato Gaopatwe (33), Thabo Ponatshego Molefe (43), Sibusiso Zakhe Khumalo (43), Collen Zwelakhe Hadebe (49), and Thapelo Arnold Nchabeleng (35), faced charges including armed robbery, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and explosives offences. Their sentences reflect the severity of their actions and are intended to deter similar crimes.
During sentencing, the court highlighted the meticulous prosecution’s presentation, detailing the audacious nature of the heist and the sophisticated methods employed by the perpetrators. The convictions were secured through comprehensive evidence gathering and expert legal argumentation.
Provincial Head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, commended the investigative teams for their dedication and professionalism. “The successful outcome of this case demonstrates our unwavering commitment to tackling violent crime and safeguarding our communities,” he said.
The case against Collen Zwelakhe Hadebe has been postponed to 7th March 2025 for trial, pending further proceedings.
