Now, wanna try out this freshly made fish cakes recipe? Let’s get to it!

Ingredients for the recipe

  • 2 cups cooked fish (hake, cod, or tuna), flaked
  • 1 cup mashed potatoes (cooled)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced (optional)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tsp lemon zest (optional, for extra freshness)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika (optional)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (plus extra for coating)
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise or 1 tsp Dijon mustard (for extra moisture)
  • 2 tbsp flour (for dusting)
  • 2 tbsp oil (for frying)

Method

  1. Prepare the mixture – In a large bowl, mix the flaked fish, mashed potatoes, onion, garlic, parsley, lemon zest, salt, pepper, paprika, and breadcrumbs. Stir in the beaten egg and mayonnaise/mustard until well combined. If the mixture is too wet, add a little more breadcrumbs.
  2. Shape the fish cakes – Using your hands, shape the mixture into small patties. Lightly dust each one with flour, then coat in extra breadcrumbs for extra crispiness.
  3. Chill (optional but recommended) – Place the fish cakes in the fridge for about 20 minutes. This helps them hold their shape while frying.
  4. Fry until golden – Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry the fish cakes for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Serve & enjoy – Drain on paper towels and serve hot with lemon wedges, tartar sauce, or a fresh side salad.

Tip: These also work great in a burger bun with some slaw for a fun twist!
