It finally happened—after decades of chart-topping hits and iconic moments, Mariah Carey has officially taken home her very first VMA.

And in true Mariah fashion, she sealed the moment by telling her new trophy, “We Belong Together.”

The pop legend received her long-overdue honour at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, 7 September, 2025, held at Long Island’s UBS Arena.

The night, hosted by LL Cool J, was packed with show-stopping performances from Doja Cat, Lady Gaga, Ricky Martin, and of course, the night’s Video Vanguard queen—Mariah Carey herself.

When Mariah hit the stage to accept her award, she delivered a heartfelt (and very Mariah) speech that had the entire arena feeling the love.

This is what she said:

“This moment is very heavy. Thank you so much, MTV, for giving me the Vanguard Award. I can’t believe I’m getting my first VMA tonight. I just have one question: Where in the Sam Hill were you all waiting? Being here brings back amazing memories—like when I presented LL Cool J with his Vanguard Award, or when Whitney Houston and I opened the show with the faux standoff. Music videos have always been a part of my life; they’re how I bring music into my world. Thank you, MTV, for playing my videos, and to my fans—I love you so much,” she said.

Here For It All album

While we are still riding high on the excitement of Mariah Carey’s big VMA win, there’s even more reason for us to celebrate. The Love Takes Time singer is gearing up to release her brand-new album, Here For It All, dropping 26 September, 2025, via Gamma.

Back in July, Mariah’s been teasing the countdown on social media, where she had posted:

“I’m so happy to finally reveal my new album title to the world. I have been keeping it under wraps for what feels like an eternity! We are almost there, and I can’t wait for you to hear it,” she wrote.

And during her big moment on stage last night, Mariah made sure to remind the world that the album drops in just two weeks.
