Freshly made KFC with Gold n CrispyWho needs takeout when you have got Gold 'n Crispy? Make your own KFC right now! Picture: Supplied

It’s Monday, the cravings are real, and let’s be honest—sometimes we just don’t have the extra cash to splurge on actual KFC.

But here’s the good news: you don’t need it. I made this crispy, golden fried chicken right in my own kitchen using Gold ‘n Crispy, and it hit every spot.

No drive-thru, no stress—just that classic crunch and juicy bite we all love, made at home without breaking the bank. Trust me, once you try this, you will feel like a fried chicken pro.

Let’s get cooking!

How to make a Homemade KFC-style chicken using Gold ‘n Crispy coating

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg chicken pieces (drumsticks, thighs, or wings)
  • 2 cups buttermilk (or substitute: 2 cups milk + 2 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar, rest 10 min)
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional: for colour and flavour)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp chicken spice or mixed herbs (optional)
  • Gold and Crispy coating mix (as per packet — usually about 1½ to 2 cups)
  • Cooking oil for deep frying

Method:

Step 1: Marinate the chicken

  1. In a large bowl, mix the buttermilk, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.
  2. Add the chicken pieces and make sure they are fully coated.
  3. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (overnight gives the best flavour and tenderness).

Step 2: Coat the chicken

4. Pour the Gold and Crispy coating mix into a large bowl or ziplock bag.
5. Take the chicken out of the buttermilk, shake off excess liquid (don’t rinse).
6. Coat each piece thoroughly in the Gold and Crispy mix — press gently so it sticks well.
7. For extra crunch: double coat – dip the chicken back in the buttermilk and coat again.

Step 3: Fry the chicken

8. Heat oil in a deep pot or pan.
9. Fry a few pieces at a time — don’t overcrowd the pot.
10. Fry until golden brown and crispy (about 12–15 minutes depending on size).
11. Check that the inside is cooked (juices run clear).
12. Place on paper towel to drain excess oil.

Step 4: Serve hot with chips, coleslaw, or mashed potatoes & gravy — just like KFC

Tips:

  • If you want that spicy KFC Zinger feel, add 1–2 tsp cayenne pepper or chili powder to your marinade.
  • For extra flavour, sprinkle a bit of aromatic spice mix (like Robertson’s Chicken Spice) into the Gold and Crispy mix.
  • If baking instead of frying: drizzle lightly with oil and bake at 200°C for 35–45 min until golden and crisp.
