Looking for a wild way to spend your weekend?

The Bothongo Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve has just rolled out its brand-new Sunset Safari Game Drives, now happening every Saturday and Sunday evening from 17:00 to 19:00 – and it’s the perfect excuse to swap the city lights for golden skies and roaming wildlife.

Just a short trip from Johannesburg and Pretoria, this gem tucked inside the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site invites you to explore the wild like never before – at twilight.

A Safari like no other

Hop aboard a guided safari through more than 1,200 hectares of breathtaking Savannah Highveld and rugged hills, where over 600 animals and 30 species roam freely – including lions, rhinos, cheetahs, wild dogs, buffalo, crocodiles, and even hippos. As the sun dips below the horizon, keep your camera ready – this two-hour drive promises magical views, unforgettable encounters, and a front-row seat to nature’s day-to-night transformation.

Field guide Didi Mahlo captures the magic perfectly

Speaking of the new experience, field guide Didi Mahlo shared her excitement:

“There is nothing quite like being in the heart of the bush as the sun sets. The golden light transforms the landscape, and the bushveld comes alive with a different energy. There’s something magical about watching the bush come alive as the sun sets, the calls of the night creatures, the shifting light, and the chance to see some of our most iconic wildlife preparing for evening activity. It’s a completely different perspective of the African wilderness. These drives allow our guests to experience the magic of the Highveld at its most peaceful and dramatic hour, creating memories that truly last,” said Didi.

Pack your binoculars — Here’s what It will cost you

Curious about what it takes to join the herd? Here’s a breakdown of the costs for this unforgettable sunset safari experience:

  • Adults: R690 per person (minimum of 2 people per booking)
  • Kids (5–12 years): R480 per child
  • Pensioners (60+): R540 per person
  • One child under 12 rides free per paying adult

Make a day of It

Every Sunset Safari booking includes full-day access to the reserve, so why not turn your evening drive into a full-on day in the wild? Arrive early and enjoy a self-drive safari, bring along a picnic to enjoy at one of the scenic braai spots, or cool off with a splash in the reserve’s swimming pool before climbing aboard your open safari vehicle — which comfortably seats 10 to 20 guests.

Be it you are planning a family outing, a fun day with friends, or a romantic escape into nature, the Sunset Safari offers the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and jaw-dropping scenery — all just a stone’s throw from Johannesburg and Pretoria.
