Lady Gaga is known for pushing boundaries, both musically and personally, and her latest reflections show just how deeply she connects with her art.
The pop icon recently shared her thoughts on the creative journey behind her new album, MAYHEM, revealing how the project has been a personal exploration of chaos, empowerment, and self-discovery.
For Gaga, the album represents more than just music. She describes it as a blend of “sonic hard edges” and pop melodies, crafted to find joy even in the midst of struggle. Every track reflects her journey of navigating storms — both personal and professional — and embracing the lessons that come with them.

Creating her own storm
The pop star also revisits her earlier work, particularly Harlequin, which she says laid the foundation for MAYHEM. That album, she explains, was about empowerment and refusing to be minimized, setting the stage for her most ambitious and introspective work yet. Through her music, Gaga explores identity, transformation, and emotional resilience, questioning what it means to drift from oneself and ultimately reclaim her own voice.
For Lady Gaga, this year has been about taking control and owning her path. Through her deep connection with fans and her personal relationships, she’s learned to be the one creating the storm rather than standing helpless in its center. It’s a powerful message about artistic freedom, self-definition, and embracing one’s own journey.

Gaga speaks out
Taking to Instagram, Lady Gaga shared a heartfelt post reflecting on these themes and her experience making the album and this is what she wrote:
“Reconnecting with Brian for this interview after all these years felt kind of monumental. In a way I feel like I relived with him so much of what I relived writing and producing this album. All its sonic hard edges and plight lifted by pop melodies and poetry to find the joy in it all. This album was me figuring out how to breathe during a storm — really you just keep inhaling all wind while you pray the storm will stop. MAYHEM is my personal chaos — born of intuition and sometimes clear and other times utterly broken but always produced with a desire to embolden my own voice as a musician.
“I have spoken a lot about MAYHEM being a collection of gothic dreams and in a way Lady Gaga was my first one. She has always been an expression of my human reality. What does it sound like to feel like you’re drifting far away from yourself, what does it sound like to re-enter your body? What if you just want to Vanish into someone else to heal it all and maybe never come back? What if I don’t want to define myself? What if I tried to?
“And Harlequin … it feels like much more than a year ago. It’s an album about empowerment and refusing to be minimized or left out in the cold. These arrangements are my first new steps since Tony died. I’m so proud of Harlequin and how it prepared me for the most incredible year of MAYHEM. Sometimes I forget this has been just one single year.
“Somehow through my relationship and my deep love for my fans I really accepted that I can do it all as long as I am the one who is creating the storm instead of the one just standing in the center of it. So instead of being haunted by the birds I will become one of them. And I will be fine. Because it’s my dream and no one else’s. I will decide for myself how this ends,” wrote Lady Gaga.
