The mood has been hyped, starting off as the all-luring Black Friday and then all the shops have been properly imaged.

Christmas icons everywhere. The songs match the festive spirit – ‘Let It Snow’ is now receiving immortal and generous airplay of radio, in malls, everywhere. But hang on! My bro, you are going to spend! And yes, you have fallen into the commercial trap of Christmas. You will need very strong willpower but when that fails.

Here is how you can survive all the drama and keep your pockets zipped:

1. Panic Buying at the Last Minute

One of the biggest slip-ups during Christmas is rushing around days before the big event. Panic buying usually leads to overspending and grabbing whatever seems acceptable. Avoid this by planning gifts early, comparing prices, and setting a strict limit before stepping into any shop or online basket.

2. Ignoring a Festive Budget

Many people dive into the season without a clear plan, only to face a financial hangover after Christmas. Build a realistic budget that includes gifts, food, travel, and social events. Track what you spend and update it as the month goes on. A simple spreadsheet or budgeting app can keep everything in check.

3.Overspending on Food and Entertaining

Hosting is fun, but it’s easy to go overboard during Christmas gatherings. Stick to a menu, shop with a list, and avoid buying ‘just in case’. Share responsibilities—ask friends or family to bring a dish. The season is about connection, not who lays out the biggest spread.

4. Falling for Sales That Aren’t Real Deals

Seasonal discounts can be tempting, especially around Christmas when retailers push ‘limited’ offers. Before buying, compare historic prices to see if it’s genuinely a bargain. If you didn’t need it before, you probably don’t need it now.

5. Forgetting About Hidden Costs

During Christmas, wrapping paper, decorations, shipping fees, and party outfits all add up quietly. List these extras in your budget so nothing catches you off guard.

Stay intentional, stay calm, and let your wallet breathe. The festive season should bring joy — not financial regret.
