Happpppyyyyyy BACK-TO-SCHOOL DAY, folks!!!
Hey parents — howzit going? How was that morning rush? Did you survive the traffic? The hooting? The school-gate Olympics where everyone’s trying to drop kids off at the same time? Be it you were escorting your bundle of joy or pushing a half-asleep teenager out the car, you made it!
So… was your child excited to be back at school? Or did the holiday vibes disappear way too fast? Either way, give yourself a pat on the back — you survived Day One!
No matter how chaotic (or calm) your morning was, thank you for still showing up to our daily food meeting. You know this is one meeting we can never afford to miss because our lives depend on it, hahaha!
And since January is still holding us by the ankle (you know the struggle), today’s recipe is budget-friendly, comforting, and seriously delicious. We are making Homestyle Onion Beef Patties — super easy, super versatile, and perfect with just about anything.
So grab a seat, relax a bit, and let me show you how to whip up these beef patties — plus all the tasty ways you can serve them.
How to make Homestyle Onion Beef Patties
Ingredients:
- 500g beef mince
- 1 small onion, very finely chopped or grated
- 1 garlic clove, crushed
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil (for frying)
Method:
- Mix gently: In a bowl, combine the beef mince, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix lightly with your hands—don’t overwork it.
- Shape the patties: Divide the mixture into medium-sized patties and flatten slightly.
- Rest (optional but nice): Let the patties rest for 5–10 minutes so they hold together better.
- Cook: Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry patties for about 4–5 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve warm: Remove from the pan and rest for a minute before serving.
What to serve it with:
*With pap & gravy
*In a soft roll with tomato and onion
*With mashed potatoes or chakalaka
*Even on its own with a simple salad
