In a defiant display of activism, a group of opposition activists gathered outside the Harare Magistrate’s Court today, to activists demand government accountability – delivering a fervent message to the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The scene, captured in a viral video, shows the activists chanting, singing, and dancing, as they called for urgent action on issues of governance, corruption, and freedom in ZImbabwe.
The activists, identified as members of the opposition movement, expressed their frustration with what they described as rampant corruption and a lack of political freedoms under President Mnangagwa’s administration. They warned that if these issues are not addressed promptly, they would escalate their protests across the country.
The gathering outside the court was particularly poignant as 78 alleged members of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) were applying for bail. The group had been arrested for allegedly illegally assembling at their leader’s residence in Avondale, a suburb of Harare. Despite facing legal challenges, the activists remained undeterred, using the court appearance as a platform to amplify their demands for justice and accountability.
In the video footage, which quickly spread across social media platforms, the activists can be heard chanting slogans demanding governmental reforms and denouncing corruption. The activists’ message to President Mnangagwa was clear: address corruption and ensure political freedoms, or face intensified protests and dissent from the opposition and civil society. Their bold stance outside the courthouse symbolised a growing frustration among Zimbabweans over economic hardships, political repression, and allegations of government misconduct and the activists demand government accountability.
According to Change Radio, 78 alleged members CCC members were arrested at Jameson Timba’s house for an illegal political gathering. A woman is alleged to have been severely beaten leaving here with a broken leg. Unconfirmed reports also suggested the woman had lost her baby as a result of the assaults.
The bail hearing for Timba and his fellow 78 political detainees has been postponed to Thursday 27th June at 11am.
