Why an ANC and DA coalition government may be best for South Africa

The South African pass mark for Matric is under 40%, just about the exact pass mark the African National Congress (ANC) has got in the just ended 2024 election. But we all know that mark takes no one to university — in this case the university we call government. That pass mark is a far-cry to the 65% and above required to govern, and as such, some correspondence will have to be done, including taking some unlikely course called ‘ANC and DA coalition government’.

In the wake of the 2024 election, the ANC finds itself at a critical juncture. Securing just above 40% of the vote, the ANC faces the necessity of forming a coalition to govern effectively. While there are several potential partners, it is in the national interest for the ANC to consider the Democratic Alliance (DA) over any other party. An ANC and DA coalition government, though seemingly unlikely, promises the most robust approach to addressing South Africa’s pressing issues of corruption, crime, and high unemployment.

The emergence of the MK (Umkhonto we Sizwe) as a significant player in the 2024 elections should not obscure its origins and limitations. Essentially, the MK is an offshoot of the ANC, born from the frustrations of disillusioned former members. While their success in the recent elections indicates a protest vote rather than a substantial shift in political ideology, their impact on national governance would be minimal in terms of fresh perspectives. The MK’s policies and approach are closely aligned with those of the ANC, rendering a coalition with them redundant in the quest for innovative solutions to longstanding problems.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), led by Julius Malema, present a different challenge. The EFF’s appeal to the impoverished Black populace is undeniable, yet their radical policies pose a significant threat to South Africa’s economic stability, particularly concerning Western investors. Malema’s rhetoric and policy proposals, while resonating with a section of the electorate, require substantial moderation to become palatable to a broader audience, including the investor community. A coalition with the EFF risks alienating critical financial stakeholders and could undermine the economic recovery efforts vital for the country’s future.

In contrast, the Democratic Alliance (DA) offers a more stable and administratively sound partner for the ANC. The DA’s governance record, particularly in the Western Cape and other municipalities, demonstrates a commitment to meticulous administration and effective service delivery. This track record is crucial for instilling confidence in both domestic and international stakeholders, who are vital for South Africa’s economic revitalisation. An ANC and DA coalition government would provide a balanced and effective administration.

Coalition governments, permitted under the South African Constitution, are formed when no single party secures a majority in the national assembly. They require collaboration and compromise, ensuring that multiple perspectives are considered in policy-making. Such governments can be more inclusive and representative, leading to balanced and comprehensive governance.

For the ANC, a coalition with the DA would signal a decisive shift towards prioritising efficiency and transparency. The DA’s insistence on good governance practices aligns well with the urgent need to combat corruption and inefficiency within the public sector. By embracing this partnership, the ANC can leverage the DA’s administrative prowess to implement reforms that can reduce crime and create employment opportunities, addressing two of the nation’s most pressing concerns.

Furthermore, an ANC and DA coalition government would foster a political environment conducive to long-term stability and growth. The DA’s pragmatic approach to economic policies can help attract and retain investment, crucial for job creation and economic development. This collaboration would not only strengthen the government’s capacity to address immediate challenges but also lay the groundwork for sustained progress.

So, while the ANC faces several coalition options, partnering with the DA stands out as the most beneficial for South Africa. The DA’s proven administrative capabilities, coupled with the ANC’s broad political experience, can create a synergy capable of tackling the nation’s challenges head-on. An ANC and DA coalition government would demonstrate a commitment to good governance, economic stability, and inclusive growth, providing the foundation for a brighter future for all South Africans.
