Los Angeles R&B artist Tracy J is bringing the heat with his latest song, Energy—a soulful fusion of R&B and pop that hits deep. The song, produced and co-written by Quintin “Arsnøvä” Pooler and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Jose Cardoza (who has worked with Ariana Grande, Ciara, MAJOR, and Rotimi), unpacks the bittersweet reality of investing in the wrong relationship. With atmospheric production and heartfelt lyrics, Energy captures that moment of post-breakup clarity—the realization that some things were never meant to be.
His other well-known hits include Intrigue, Run Run, Dopamine, and Vacay.
In this exclusive interview with Africa Jamz FM News, Tracy J delves into the story behind his latest song and reflects on his musical journey ─ from singing in church to becoming a leading artist who writes, produces, and releases his own music.
The story behind the song Energy
Originally intended for American musician Janet Jackson, Energy took an unexpected turn when it landed in Tracy J’s hands. He shares his initial reaction upon realising the song would be his and explains how he transformed it into a deep personal track, making it his own.
“My bro, Arsnøvä (Quintin Pooler), offered the song to me about a year or so before the song’s release because he felt that song would be a good match for me and I absolutely agreed. We both worked together to make the song mine by rewriting the bridge and adding in some of that Tracy J vocal color. Arsnøvä and I have amazing music chemistry that steams from our brotherhood,” said Tracy J.
Blending classic R&B with a modern touch
Tracy J also discusses how his music seamlessly blends classic R&B with a modern twist, striking the perfect balance between nostalgia and innovation to create a sound that feels both timeless and fresh.
“I believe that I have always had a nostalgic plus futuristic blend since I started making music as a teenager. It could also be attributed to my deep love for True R&B and my appreciation for futuristic sci-fi. For me, it’s all about what resonates with me as I’m creating. It’s about creating something that is felt: lyrically, melodically, harmonically, and musically. When a song feels good, that’s what invokes a response from and creates a sense of connection for the listener,” said Tracy J.
How gospel roots and classical training shaped Tracy J’s music style
Tracy J’s musical style is deeply rooted in his gospel upbringing and classical training. He shares how these early influences still play a key role in shaping his approach to making and performing music today.
“My gospel roots and classical training help me to approach my performance in the studio and on stage. Both require a high level of discipline and that discipline is something that doesn’t really seem to be as apparent with many artists in this era, in comparison to artists who come from eras where they didn’t have all the pitch correction plugins and effects. My gospel and classical background play a role in helping me to continue to grow and strive for my best as a vocalist and vocal arranger. It has helped me to understand my “instrument,” said Tracy J.
Tracy J’s collaboration with big names in the industry
Tracy J has collaborated with major industry names and even produced a film soundtrack. He shares insights on his next big move and what fans can look forward to in 2025.
“I Have started the process of working on my first album, which I hope to release later this year. And… I am looking forward to some acting opportunities. I will also be launching some new Tracy J merch in spring of 2025 on my website TracyJ.com,” said Tracy J.
