From standing on the Idols SA Season 13 stage as a runner-up to navigating the unexpected twists of life beyond the spotlight, Mthokozisi Ndaba’s journey has been one of triumph, heartbreak, and resilience.
Mthokozisi was a contenstant on Idols SA Season 13, where he competed against Paxton Fielies, who was ultimately crowned the winner of the season.
Shortly after the season ended in 2017, Mthokozisi’s life appeared to be full of promises, with his music career beginning to take off. However, as time went on, things took an unexpected turn.
He was taken into custody for allegedly assaulting his partner and later acknowledged struggling with alcohol addiction, for which he sought help.
Additionally, he lost multiple sponsorships, gigs and a record label deal before opening up about his battle with depression.
His journey has come full circle, from being a rising star to working as an Uber driver.
From fame to home
In an exclusive interview with Africa Jamz FM News, Mthokozisi shared the journey of his life from the last time we saw him singing on TV in 2017 to where he is now. He reflects on how he never expected his life to unfold the way it did.
“Reflecting on my journey on Idols SA, I was indeed a fan favorite with high hopes for the future. Little did I imagine the twists and turns life would take after the show,” said Mthokozisi.
Life after the spotlight
Many people believe that being on a platform like Idols guarantees success. However, Mthokozisi opened up about the toughest lesson he has learned about the industry and life after spotlight.
“Looking back at my time on Idols, I realised that success is not guaranteed just by being on a popular platform. The hardest lesson I have learned about the industry and life after the spotlight is that consistent hard work, determination, and resilience are essential to sustain success in the competitive entertainment industry,” said Mthokozisi.
Challenges that most artists do not speak out about
Mthokozisi has encountered challenges that many artists hesitate to discuss openly. He shares what kept him going through difficult times and reflects on what music means to him today.
“Through the challenges I have faced, my passion for music has been my guiding light. It’s the outlet for my emotions and stories, keeping me motivated to persevere in tough times. Music is my voice, my solace, and my driving force, shaping my journey and helping me navigate life’s ups and downs,” said Mthokozisi.
From performing on big stages to working as an Uber driver
From performing on big stages to now working as an Uber driver, Mthokozisi reflects on the lessons this journey has taught him about resilience, purpose, and redefining success.
“This journey has taught me that resilience isn’t just about bouncing back, but also about adapting and finding value in every experience. Purpose can evolve—what matters most is staying true to your core values, even if the path changes. Success isn’t a fixed destination, but a personal definition that can shift with time and circumstance,” said Mthokozisi.
Advice to young Mthokozisi
Mthokozisi shared the advice he would give his younger self−the Mthokozisi fresh off Idols−if he had the chance to sit down with him and reflect on the journey ahead.
“I would tell him to stay grounded and patient, reminding him that success is a marathon, not a sprint. Embrace the highs and lows, learn from every experience, and always stay true to yourself, no matter the pressure,” said Mthokozisi.
