Buying a mattress might seem like a simple task. After all, it’s just a bed, right?

But when you are faced with endless options, different comfort levels, and a price range that could make your head spin, choosing the right one feels more like dating than shopping. Whether you are dealing with backpain, fighting for space with a partner, or just looking for something that will keep you comfortable for years to come, finding the perfect mattress is no easy feat. So, how do you make the right choice without the guesswork or buyer’s remorse?

Meet the mattress guru

In an interview with Africa Jamz FM News, Restonic Training and Product Manager Lebogang Matlou shares key tips for making the best mattress-buying decisions.

“Buying a bed is an investment in your well-being, so start by identifying your specific needs. Consider who the bed is for, what comfort level suits your sleep style (plush vs. firm), and the bed size that fits your space. Testing mattresses in-store is key—lie down, check for spinal alignment, and ensure the bed supports your body properly. Also, factor in special features like cooling technology or hypoallergenic materials if needed,” said Matlou.

How do you know it’s time to change?

We all know how important a good night’s sleep is, but how do we know when it’s time to
invest in a new mattress?

“If your mattress is 7-10 years old, sagging, or causing you aches and pains, it’s likely
time for a replacement. Other signs include struggling to sleep comfortably or sleeping better on
another bed. Additionally, major life changes—such as pregnancy, illness, or weight
changes—may mean your current mattress may no longer meets your needs,” said Matlou.

Finding the perfect one

Matlou also shared the secret to finding the perfect one for two people with completely different sleep styles.

“Finding the perfect mattress for two people with different sleep styles can be
challenging, but can be achieved by considering the following factors:

  • Body weight: Heavier individuals need a firmer mattress which has more support. If your partner is a ‘heavy’ sleeper, don’t opt for a soft mattress which will be more prone to sagging, rather compromise and find a firmness that can work for both partners.
  • Consider motion isolation: If one partner moves a lot during sleep, look for a pocket spring mattress, which will be excellent for motion isolation and prevent disturbances.
  • Test mattress together: Visit mattress stores together and spend time lying in beds to find a perfect bed for both of you.
  • Communicate & Compromise: Find a middle ground that will lead to a peaceful night’s sleep for both partners.

Misconceptions about buying ONE

For everything, there will always be a misconception, and it is no different when it comes to buying a new mattress. Matlou elaborates on the biggest misconception people have and how they can avoid falling for it.

“Many people see mattresses as a grudge purchase rather than an investment in
their health and well-being. Sleep affects overall health and daily performance, so buying a
quality mattress should be a priority, not an afterthought. Another misconception is assuming all mattresses feel the same taking the time to test different options and understanding the technology behind them can lead to a much better sleep experience,” said Matlou.

How to buy a mattress without breaking the bank

If you are on a budget but still want a great mattress, here’s what you should look for without
breaking the bank.

“Prioritise comfort and support over brand names or extra features. If the mattress is
for occasional use (like a guest room), a simpler, cost-effective option may be sufficient. Look
out for seasonal promotions. Also, decide whether you need a full bed set (mattress and base)
or just a mattress, as this impacts cost,” said Matlou.
