In a recently released video, renowned Reggae Dancehall selector and soundsystem owner, Prezident Chiki, passionately urged Zimbabwean promoters to invest in the vibrant culture of dubplate and sound clash. Chiki emphasised the potential for growth and excitement within the local music scene, lamenting the fact that many soundsystems in Zimbabwe are currently lying idle due to a lack of support and promotion for sound clash events.
“Zimbabwe has a rich reservoir of talent and some amazing soundsystems that are just gathering dust,” Chiki stated emphatically.
“We need promoters who are willing to champion the sound clash culture and bring it to the forefront. This is not just about playing music; it’s about showcasing creativity, skill, and the unique energy that only a sound clash can deliver.”
Chiki pointed out the successful integration of sound clash culture in other regions, using these examples to illustrate the potential benefits for Zimbabwe. He highlighted how these events not only energise the local music community but also attract international attention and tourism, bringing economic benefits to the country.

The selector was particularly vocal about the distinctions between authentic sound clashes and other forms of music battles.
“Sound clash is a specific cultural phenomenon with deep roots in Reggae and Dancehall. It should not be confused with DJ battles or other events that do not adhere to the same traditions and spirit,” Chiki explained. He called on the organisers of the Zimbabwe UK Cup Clash to maintain the integrity of the sound clash culture, ensuring that their events properly represent the history and artistry involved.
According to Chiki, the lack of genuine sound clash events has led to a stagnation in the scene, with many talented selectors and soundsystems not receiving the recognition they deserve.
“It’s high time we revitalise this aspect of our musical heritage,” he urged.
“Promoters need to step up and invest in sound clashes to provide a platform for these hidden talents to shine.”
Chiki’s call to action was clear: with the right support and enthusiasm from promoters, Zimbabwe could become a hotspot for this culture, reigniting the passion and rivalry that makes this musical tradition compelling.
