It was a deeply emotional and memorable day for singer Rethabile Khumalo as she honoured her late mother, the legendary Winnie Khumalo, with a powerful tribute event titled Live My Legacy on 4 October 2025. The celebration took place at Soweto Meat Lovers in Protea Glen Ext 28.

The event, filled with both joy and reflection, honoured Winnie’s remarkable 39-year journey in the music industry. It drew a star-studded lineup of South African music icons, including DJ Zinhle, Mörda, Chicco Twala, Candy Tsamandebele, and Trompies — all coming together to celebrate a life that left an undeniable mark on Mzansi’s musical landscape.

Winnie Khumalo sadly passed away on 7 January 2025 at the age of 51, following a short illness. Her passing sent shockwaves through the country, leaving fans, family, friends, and fellow artists heartbroken.

Gone but not forgotten

Now, just months later, Rethabile found a powerful way to channel her grief — by celebrating her mother’s life and legacy through music, unity, and love.

Following the event, Rethabile took to Instagram to share a touching message of gratitude to everyone who showed up, stood by her, and helped honour her mother’s memory. She made it clear that the outpouring of support did not go unnoticed.

Here’s the message she wrote:

“Forever grateful for the love and support shown at #LiveMyLegacy – a beautiful celebration honouring my late mom, Winnie Khumalo’s legacy. To my industry friends, music supporters, and everyone who came through – thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your presence meant the world.

“A special thank you to the Soweto community for always showing up with so much love, and to @sowetomeatlovers for being incredible partners in making this event so special,” wrote Rethabile.

In addition to her message, Rethabile shared a moment from the event as she stood beside her mother Winnie Khumalo’s portrait.
