Who says Mondays have to drag? Not when there’s homemade egg bread in the mix!
This golden, fluffy loaf is your new secret weapon for starting the week strong. Packed with rich flavour, soft texture, and just the right hint of sweetness, it’s the kind of bread that turns “meh” mornings into “heck yes” moments. Toast it, tear it, sandwich it—just don’t be surprised when the loaf disappears before Tuesday.
How to make a homemade Egg bread
Ingredients:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tsp instant yeast
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs (1 for dough, 1 for brushing)
- Optional: 1 tsp vanilla extract
Method:
- Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, mix the warm water, 1 tsp sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, mix flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, warm milk, softened butter, and 1 egg (plus vanilla if using). Mix until it forms a sticky dough.
- Knead: Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
- Shape the bread: Punch down the dough to release air. Shape it into a loaf or divide into small rolls for mini egg breads. Place in a greased loaf pan or baking tray. Cover and let it rise for another 30–40 minutes.
- Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Egg wash: Beat the remaining egg and brush it gently over the top of the loaf. This gives a shiny, golden crust.
- Bake: Bake for 25–30 minutes (35–40 minutes for larger loaves) until golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool: Let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Tips:
*For a soft, fluffy texture, you can replace some of the milk with cream.
*Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for a lightly spiced version.
*Serve warm with butter, jam, or even enjoy as a sandwich.
