A distressing viral video has surfaced from Wedza, a growth point outside Marondera in Zimbabwe, showing a group of women brutally beating a young girl. The video, which has gone viral, has left the community in shock and sparked widespread condemnation across the nation.
The disturbing footage in the viral video shows the women accusing the young girl of informing their husbands about their alleged infidelities. One woman can be seen viciously hitting the girl with sticks as she pleads for mercy, repeatedly asking them not to strike her head. “Musandirove musoro wangu … mandityora makumbo,” she begs, but her cries fall on deaf ears.

Adding to the horror, one of the women records the savage attack, further humiliating the victim. The viral video has ignited outrage on social media and in various communities, with many denouncing the barbarity displayed by the women.
The pot has been boiling for too long
“This is just a tip of the iceberg,” Netsai Chimburu told Africa Jamz FM. “People are angry, my brother. People are really, really angry. This is just a tip of the iceberg. Any small mistake, things will really go out of control. It has been simmering for a very long time. So these are just the signs. Normal people cannot gang up to beat someone and worse, record this.”
A Wedza woman, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, echoed these sentiments. “This is not normal behaviour. This level of violence reflects a deeper issue within our society.”
Some have pointed fingers at the Zanu PF government’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa, criticising his “kusvasvanga” rhetoric, where he has openly threatened citizens with violence for criticising or opposing the government. This culture of intimidation, they argue, has contributed to the pervasive anger and violence showcased in the viral video.
As the viral video continues to circulate, calls for justice and accountability grow louder. The community of Wedza and the nation at large grapple with the implications of such brutality, questioning the societal and governmental factors that may have fuelled this heinous act.
