Ever been to a party where everything looks perfect—the outfits are on point, the drinks are flowing, the people are vibing—but somehow it just does not hit?

You find yourself checking your phone, sitting more than dancing, and wondering why the energy feels off. Then, suddenly, one song drops, the mood shifts, and just like that, the dancefloor comes alive.

That’s when it hits you: it was never about the party; it was about the DJ all along!

For Sphiwe Mathe, popularly known as DJ Sphiwe RSA from Thokoza, creating that moment is not luck. It’s a skill he has been honing since his early days behind the decks.

He showed interest in deejaying at just 13 years old and has grown into a dynamic DJ known for reading the crowd and keeping people on their feet.

Rooted in passion and shaped by experience, he represents a new wave of DJs who understand that it’s not just about playing music but about creating an unforgettable vibe and memories.

In this exclusive interview with Africa Jamz FM News, we sit down with DJ Sphiwe RSA as he takes us behind the decks and into the mindset of what it really takes to keep a party alive.

Reading the Room: How DJ Sphiwe brings the crowd back to life

We have all been at that party where something just feels… off. As the conversation got rolling, DJ Sphiwe RSA jumped right in, sharing exactly what he spots first when a crowd is not clicking—and the tricks he uses to turn that energy around and get everyone moving again.

“When the crowd is not connecting, you can feel it immediately. As a DJ, it’s my job to read the room quickly. I usually switch it up and drop something familiar, or go back to a song that has an emotional connection. It’s about rebuilding trust with the crowd until they are with you again,” said DJ Sphiwe RSA.

When one song sparks the crowd

There’s always that one song that sends everyone straight to the dancefloor. As we kept talking, DJ Sphiwe RSA opened up about what that moment feels like for him behind the decks—the rush, the energy, and the magic of seeing a crowd come alive.

“That moment is everything. When I drop that one song and suddenly people scream, rush to the dancefloor, and sing along, it’s like electricity. It feels powerful, but also humbling, because you realise how much influence music has on people’s emotions. Those kinds of reactions remind me why I fell in love with being a DJ in the first place,” said DJ Sphiwe RSA.

Turning a flat night into a full crowd

I asked DJ Sphiwe RSA if he has ever faced a night where nothing was clicking at first—when the crowd just was not feeling it—and how he managed to turn it all around. Here’s exactly what he shared about that intense, behind-the-decks moment:

“I have had a night like that before. At first, nothing connected, as it was my first time playing at Boulevard Cafe. The crowd was intense, and I had to try different genres to connect with the people. I also had to trust my skill and slowly rebuild the set, starting completely from a different direction. When it finally clicked and the crowd came alive, it was one of the most rewarding feelings because I had earned it. It also gave me back my confidence while I was on the decks,” said DJ Sphiwe RSA.

Balancing the beat for every personality

At any party, the crowd is a mix of personalities. Some are craving Amapiano, others want old-school classics, and some just want to soak up the vibe. DJ Sphiwe RSA talks about how he reads all those different tastes and how he keeps everyone moving without missing a beat.

“It’s all about balance and storytelling. I mix different sounds like Amapiano and deep house, especially with a diverse crowd, in a way that feels natural. It’s like taking people on a journey where everyone feels connected, making sure that each shift in genre still flows seamlessly. The key is in the transitions,” said DJ Sphiwe RSA.

Trust the DJ

As our conversation wrapped up, I asked DJ Sphiwe RSA one final question: for anyone who’s ever been at a party and felt out of sync with the vibe, what advice would he give—and what should they know about the DJ’s role in creating that magic? Here’s how he responded:

“From a DJ’s perspective, our role is to guide the atmosphere, not control every individual experience. We are constantly observing—watching how people react, what songs spark movement, and when to switch things up. As a DJ, I create a journey, blending tracks in a way that builds connection and emotion over time.

“So if you are feeling out of sync, do not assume the night is not for you. Give it a chance, meet the music halfway, and remember that the DJ is working to bring everyone together—sometimes you just have to step into that rhythm,” said DJ Sphiwe RSA.
