On Saturday, 9 May 2026, I attended an event with my parents to celebrate the legacy of one of my favourite legendary musicians, Henry Maitin — better known to most of us as SupaFrika.

The event was organised by another music legend, Bulelwa Arosi, and it took place at SupaFrika’s home in Eldorado Park in Johannesburg.

It was put together on short notice, but honestly, what unfolded showed that when something is done with love and good intentions, it usually turns out special. And this one definitely did.

A lot happened at that gathering, and if you are a true SupaFrika fan, you might want to stay with this review — because things got emotional in the best way.

Now, this is exactly what happened.

Meeting the legends and SupaFrika

So my parents and I arrived at The Market Theatre, which was the designated meeting point for everyone before heading out together in a convoy. The first person we bumped into was none other than the legendary Bulelwa Arosi — yes, the same one from the band Taboo that gave us the hit Amigo in the 80s, and also one of my personal favourites.

Now listen… it was my first time meeting her, and I won’t lie, I got a serious adrenaline rush. I greeted her, hugged her, and honestly had to collect myself for a second.

Not long after that, while we were still around the Market Theatre area, more legends started arriving — Sydney Pepe, known for the hit song Mama’s Baby; Nomuntu Kapa, famous for her hit Satisfy Me and part of the 80s group Chimora; Aaron Ngwasheng, also known as “Mr Overdose” from Legends Corner on his Thobela FM morning show Mphatlatsane in the Morning (2–5am) and one of the key organisers behind the SupaFrika project; and Arthur Sebola, aka “Mr Fantastic,” a Thobela FM DJ who also plays a big role in organising these music legends gatherings.

Before we knew it, we were all in cars and on our way to SupaFrika’s home in Eldorado Park.

When we arrived, we knocked at the gate — and when he walked out… honestly guys, I could not believe my eyes. There he was. SupaFrika. In the flesh!

The same voice that had me dancing since I was about nine. The same artist I grew up admiring. Seeing him in person felt unreal, especially knowing how many of my musical heroes are no longer here. This moment felt like a gift.

Once inside, I got the chance to greet him properly, along with everyone else.

SupaFrika is honestly one of the most down-to-earth people I have ever come across — very humble, friendly, and respectful. As many of you may know, he survived a shooting incident years ago that left his right hand paralysed and affected his speech, which meant he could no longer sing or speak like he used to.

I had very mixed emotions sitting with him. Part of me was genuinely happy just to be in his presence, but another part of me felt deeply sad. It hurt to think that he can no longer sing, create music, or even speak freely like before.

And I won’t lie — I asked myself, “Who could do something like this to SupaFrika?” Because beyond the injury, so much more was taken from him — his voice, his performance, his gift to us.

The biggest lesson I took from that moment is how quickly life can change.

But above everything, I’m just grateful to Bulelwa Arosi for giving me the chance to be part of something so special.

Later on, more legends arrived — Condry Ziqubu, Vusi Jele, Pamela Nkutha, Volcano, and Papa — and that’s when the event truly came alive.

There was food, drinks, laughter, and great company. The atmosphere was calm, joyful, respectful, and peaceful all at once. And honestly, you could feel the love in the room.

These are truly humble people. You can see they love their fans and genuinely enjoy being around people. These are the kinds of artists you don’t just listen to — you support, attend their shows, and hope to meet one day.

We sang along to SupaFrika’s music, played his songs, danced, laughed, shared gifts, took pictures, and just created memories that will stick with me forever.

And honestly… I wish you were all there to experience it.

Messages and a room united in hope for SupaFrika

Towards the end of the event, Mr Fantastic played voice messages from other legends who couldn’t make it on the day. In those messages, you could feel the love, respect, and support for SupaFrika even from afar.

SupaFrika looked deeply moved and emotional as he took it all in. Seeing the people around him, hearing those messages — it was one of those moments where everyone in the room could feel something shift. From his reaction, you could honestly sense a feeling of hope, like maybe healing is still possible from here.

And by God’s grace, we continue to pray for his recovery, that he may be restored and able to continue with his passion and legacy.

But the real highlight of that moment was the unity. The way everyone came together — legends, organisers, family, and friends — all in one space for one purpose.

Why this last-minute celebration of SupaFrika meant everything

Overall guys, I absolutely loved this event, and I’m giving Bulelwa Arosi a solid 10 out of 10 for putting it together. Yes, it was planned on short notice, but she truly outdid herself, and her mission was clearly accomplished.

What this event showed me is that something doesn’t have to be perfect or overly fancy to be powerful. Sometimes the presence of people, genuine love, and shared respect means far more than an event that took months to plan. Moments like these don’t come often, and I’m truly grateful I got to experience it with my parents, who are also big fans of these legends.

SupaFrika gave us a legacy that will never fade, and for that, we remain thankful for everything he gave us while he was able to.

And as we continue to believe in miracles, we hold onto the hope that one day he will return to the stage and sing for us again. And when that moment comes, all of us will be there — and by us, I mean YOU.
