As ULTRA South Africa 2026 gears up to light up the continent’s electronic music scene, one of its standout success stories is heading back to where it all began.

House titan Kyle Watson—known for his signature “chunky, hypnotic” sound that’s taken over dance floors worldwide is officially locked in for a high-energy set on the Johannesburg Main Stage. This is a full-circle moment for an artist whose journey started right here at home.

Now based in the UK, Watson has spent the last decade carving out a name as one of the most exciting forces in global house music. From packed-out club residencies to major festival slots and chart-climbing releases, his rise has been steady and undeniable. Still, no matter how far his sound travels, stepping back onto a South African stage carries a different kind of weight.

With ULTRA South Africa just around the corner, anticipation is building for his return.

In this Q&A, Watson reflects on what it means to step onto the Main Stage at home, shares insight into his latest music—including a new release with Julia Church—and hints at what fans can expect from his set.

1. Kyle, you have built a strong international reputation in the house music scene. How would you describe your journey from South Africa to performing on global stages?

“It’s been a ride! There have been plenty of ups and downs but I feel pretty lucky that I’m one of the artists that got the opportunity to take my music to the world. In this industry talent and hard work can get you so far but there’s definitely an element of ‘right place right time’ for things to pop off, and for me it all just lined up really well to give me my break,” said Kyle.

2. ULTRA South Africa is one of the biggest electronic music festivals in the country. What does it mean to you personally to perform on that stage?

“I live in the UK now, and honestly it’s one of the biggest honours getting invited back to the country I grew up in to play the main stage at ULTRA. I have played a few of the other stages over the years, but to get the call up for main stage feels pretty good,” said Kyle.

3. Your sound has become instantly recognisable in the house music world. How would you describe the signature “Kyle Watson sound”?

“You will recognise a Kyle Watson track through its tough, chunky basslines and hypnotic vocals. There’s also always a groovy, dark, energetic sound to my music as well,’ said Kyle.

4. You are a firm-favourite on the ULTRA South Africa stage. How do you keep it fresh year on year, always giving fans something new and exciting?

“I try to stay true to my sound but at the same time incorporate elements of the evolving scene. I will flip some of my older records to give them a new direction, and I constantly make edits for my sets that no one else has,” said Kyle.

5. You dropped your new single Dark Side with Julia Church recently. Tell us a little bit more about that track.

“Julia and I have been in contact on and off for ten years so it feels good to finally get on a single together! It’s a house roller with a garage-inspired bassline. Julia’s vocals are the anchor and honestly do most of the hard work,” said Kyle.

6. Can fans expect any unreleased music or special edits in your ULTRA South Africa set this year?

“I’m sitting on a lot of unreleased music right now so definitely yes. I also have some upcoming releases from my label No Context Records to test out which I am excited about,” said Kyle.

7. You have collaborated with a range of artists over the years. Are there any dream collaborations you would still like to make happen?

“Something with Chris Lake would be great to lock in. Chris Lorenzo too. They are both such good producers and I would love to work together,” said Kyle.

8. Electronic music is constantly evolving. How do you stay inspired and continue pushing your sound forward?

“I listen to a ton of music. Not only dance music but other genres too. I also love watching music documentaries, I learn new synths, and I try to spend a bit of time in the studio every day,” said Kyle.

9. For fans seeing you live at Ultra South Africa, what kind of energy and experience are you hoping to deliver on stage?

“I have got to keep the energy high on a main stage like this, so that’s what I will be aiming for. I am planning on dropping a lot of my own edits, some of my tracks people would expect and a few surprises. I am so ready!,” said Kyle.
