From the streets of Mdantsane to stages across South Africa, Siphumze Fumanisa — better known as “Sphura Thee Level” — has been building a name that demands attention. His journey began at just 13, when a high school talent show revealed a raw musical talent that could not be ignored. Over the years, Sphura Thee Level sharpened his craft at open mic sessions, captivated audiences with his charisma, and earned the title of Mr Personality, which was his stepping stone that hinted at his rise in the creative industry.Breaking through with his hit single Popping Champagne featuring Buli, Sphura quickly gained traction, topping community radio charts and landing interviews on Umhlobo Wenene FM, Tru FM, and Good Hope FM. His growing momentum has seen him collaborate with industry heavyweights, including the legendary Zola 7, while also sharing stages with artists like Freddy Gwala and working closely with top producer Malackcean. We caught up with Sphura Thee Level in this exclusive Q&A with Africa Jamz FM News to talk about his journey, breakthrough moments, and what is next as he continues to carve out his space as one of South Africa’s most promising musical talents. Can you take us back to those early days — what was your world like, and what kept you going even when things were not easy? “Mdantsane was like any other kasi—poverty and crime ruled the streets, but the music was everywhere. Taverns were always packed with music lovers enjoying drinks and sharing stories over South African music. Kids would dodge school just to sit around a radio listening to music,” said Sphura Thee Level. 2. Winning Mr Personality and performing at open mic sessions clearly shaped your confidence. How did those early experiences prepare you for the stages and audiences you perform for today? “I learned that starting early has taught me patience and humility. I am more confident today because I know how to conduct myself as an artist, and that’s when I started gaining confidence on stage. Now, I rule the stage,” said Sphura Thee Level. Sphura Thee Level continues to inspire audiences through his music by creating songs that resonate with them on a personal level. Picture: Supplied 3. At first, I felt as if the world was crashing down on me, only to realise that I was slowly getting famous and starting to gain fans. I was travelling from East London to Buffalo City and Grahamstown to do shows,” said Sphura Thee Level. 4. You have worked with iconic artists like Zola 7 and shared the stage with Freddy Gwala, and now you are working with Malackcean. How have these collaborations influenced your music and vision for your career? “I have learned a great deal from both Zola 7 and Freddie Gwala. These two legends shaped the way I write music and perform on stage. They have also boosted my confidence.
