Nearly 15 years after Amy Winehouse’s death, singer-songwriter Nate James remembered his late friend with a moving tribute that speaks to a bond that endured long after her passing.

In a recent Instagram post, James reflected on visiting Winehouse’s resting place, describing the experience as though he were catching up with her once again. He recalled missing her laugh, her sarcasm, and the easy conversations they shared throughout their friendship.

In his post, James also revealed that he never got the chance to say goodbye when Winehouse died in 2011. According to the singer, he was uninvited from her funeral for reasons he still does not understand, a painful experience he says he has since made peace with.

A friendship that lives on

James and Winehouse shared a long friendship, having moved within the same UK music circles before her rise to international fame. Best known for hits including Rehab and Back to Back, Winehouse died on 23 July, 2011, at the age of 27. Her death was later ruled as alcohol poisoning.

While much of the world remembers Winehouse for her extraordinary talent and enduring musical legacy, James’ tribute offered a more personal glimpse into the woman he knew beyond the spotlight.

An emotional remembrance

Penning down his emotions, this is what Nate wrote:

“I never got to say goodbye the day you died because I was uninvited to the funeral for reasons I still don’t understand. But I have made my peace with that, and today I got to come and see you and chat like you were sat next to me on the bench, and it felt amazing. I have really missed you, your laugh, your sarcasm and today was just like old times, chatting shit as we always did!,” wrote Nate.

‘Rest easy, Amy Jade’

Continuing with his message, Nate further wrote:

“It was so good to be with you, I know you have always been with me and I thank you for coming to me and saying to me, ‘don’t worry about coming to the grave because I’m always by your side.’ But you know me, Virgo and defiant. I wanted to come and see you and have a hang with my girl.

So, thank you for a lovely time this morning. I miss you, I love you and you are always in my heart, rest easy Amy Jade. I hope you like your gift. Thanks to Sophie for bringing me to you,” wrote Nate.
