As news of Dolly Parton’s passing spread, social media quickly became a place of mourning, disbelief and gratitude, with fans struggling to come to terms with the loss of a woman whose music and unmistakable personality had touched generations.

Parton died peacefully in Nashville, Tennessee on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, at the age of 80, according to her family. A cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

Her death comes just over a year after she lost her husband, Carl Dean, who died on 3 March 2025 at the age of 82. The couple had been married for nearly six decades, and Parton had previously spoken about how deeply she struggled with life after his death.

Parton’s story continues through her Broadway musical

Adding another layer of emotion to the news is the fact that Parton had still been looking ahead to new projects.

Her autobiographical stage musical, Dolly: A True Original Musical, is still going on as planned and is scheduled to begin Broadway previews on 7 December, 2026, at New York’s St. James Theatre, with its official opening planned for 19 January 2027 — on what would have been Parton’s 81st birthday.

The musical tells the story of Parton’s life and career through her own music and words, taking audiences through her journey from her humble beginnings to becoming one of the world’s most recognisable entertainers.
