Loneliness often arrives when we least expect it.

It’s a feeling many people experience at different stages of life, but for some elderly people living alone, it slowly becomes part of everyday life.

The children move away. Friends pass on. The house becomes quieter. The table that once seated a family now holds a single plate.

Over time, even the way elderly people cook begins to change.

Not because they have forgotten how. But because for them, cooking was never only about food. It was always about sharing.

When there is only one person to cook for, meals become smaller and simpler.

So when I created The Visitor’s Egg – Caramelised Onion Omelette , I kept thinking about what happens when that one ordinary day of an elderly person is interrupted by an unexpected knock on the door.

A grandchild stopping by.

A neighbour checking in.

A church friend coming for a visit.

This meal uses ingredients that are often already in the kitchen, as it reflects the reality of many elderly people who cook for one. But more than that, it speaks to what happens in the moment someone is remembered.

A chair is pulled out.

A plate is set.

And an ordinary meal becomes something to share as someone has arrived.

So, The Visitor’s Egg – Caramelised Onion Omelette is my tribute to those small moments of connection that can make someone feel seen, valued, and less alone.

Now let me show you to make your own!

How to make The Visitor’s Egg – Caramelised Onion Omelette

Budget: R17–R25
Serves: 1 elderly person or 2 people sharing a light meal and conversation

Ingredients:

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 medium onion
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Optional: a small handful of chopped herbs or spinach if available

Method:

  1. Build the base: Slice onion thinly. Cook slowly in oil over low heat. Allow it to become soft and slightly sweet.
  2. Prepare the eggs: Beat eggs with salt and pepper. Do not over-whisk.
  3. Create the layer: Pour eggs over the onions. Cook gently on low heat. Fold once or twice only.
  4. Finish softly: Remove while still slightly creamy. The texture should feel comforting, not dry.
