After more than two decades away from the spotlight, beloved South African R&B and pop duo Twins are making a much-anticipated return to the music scene. The iconic brothers, Nhlanhla and Lucky Shabangu, are opening an exciting new chapter in their musical journey with the release of their new single, Amalangabi, which is now available on major streaming platforms. The duo captured the hearts of music lovers in the 1990s with their soulful melodies, rich African harmonies and moving songwriting. Their hit Love 10 Thousand became a fan favourite, cementing their place among the memorable musical acts of the era. Although they eventually stepped away from the limelight to pursue separate personal and professional paths, their music continued to hold a special place in the hearts of fans. Now, the brothers are back, bringing the familiar magic of their sound to a new generation. Amalangabi offers a fresh take on their much-loved classic, blending the soulful essence and signature harmonies that made them popular with a contemporary sound. The single also sets the stage for a full-length album expected before the end of the year, while fans can look forward to seeing the duo reconnect with audiences through a nationwide South African tour. Now, in this Q&A, the Twins speak about their reunion, the inspiration behind their return, reimagining a beloved classic, their upcoming album and nationwide tour, and what lies ahead in this exciting new chapter of their musical journey. Let’s hear what they had to say: 1. After more than two decades away from the music scene, what inspired you to reunite and why does this feel like the right time for Twins to make a comeback? “The timing felt natural and meaningful. For many years, we received messages from listeners who still connected with our music and asked when we would return. We never wanted to come back just for nostalgia; we wanted to return when we had something honest, relevant, and worthwhile to say. Over time, we grew personally and professionally, and we reached a point where the desire to create together became stronger than ever. “The current music landscape has also created room for artists from different generations to connect. We felt that our sound, our story, and our experience could add something valuable to the conversation. This comeback is not about trying to recreate the past exactly as it was; it is about honoring where we came from while embracing who we are today,” said the Twins. The duo has also enjoyed success with a string of popular tracks, including “Shona Phansi (Get Down),” “Mshove” and “Higher and Higher.” Picture: Supplied 2. What have you both been up to personally and professionally during your time away from the music scene? “During our time away from the spotlight, we focused on our personal lives, families, growth, and different professional commitments. Like many people, we experienced life in ways that shaped our perspectives—through responsibilities, challenges, successes, and the lessons that come with maturity. “Professionally, we remained connected to creativity and to the entertainment industry in different ways, even when we were not actively releasing music. The time away allowed us to reflect on our identity as artists without the pressure of constantly being visible. It also gave us space to appreciate the gift of music more deeply. When we eventually returned to the studio together, we brought more life experience, patience, clarity, and purpose into the process,” said the Twins. 3. Did you expect South Africans to still hold onto and cherish your 90s music for all these years? “Honestly, we hoped that the music would have a lasting impact, but we could not have fully predicted the depth of the love people have continued to show. It is incredibly humbling to meet people who can still sing the words, remember where they were when they first heard our songs, or tell us that our music was part of their youth, relationships, and family memories. “South Africans have a powerful relationship with music. Songs become part of people’s lives and are carried from one generation to another. Seeing younger listeners discover our 90s catalog through their parents, relatives, radio, and social media has been particularly moving. That continued support reminded us that the music still has a place, and it encouraged us to create again,” said the Twins. 4. Why did you choose to remake your 90s hit Love 10 Thousand into Amalangabi for your comeback? “Love 10 Thousand has always held a special place in our hearts because of the emotional connection listeners have with it. We wanted our comeback single to acknowledge that history while also presenting a new version of Twins for today. Amalangabi gave us the opportunity to revisit the spirit and emotion of the original song in a fresh, contemporary, and culturally resonant way. “The title Amalangabi, meaning “flames,” reflects the passion, warmth, intensity, and enduring nature of love. It also represents the fire that never truly left us as artists. We wanted the song to feel familiar to those who grew up with us while still sounding exciting and accessible to listeners discovering us for the first time,” said the Twins. 5. How did you balance keeping your classic 90s R&B sound while updating it for today’s younger listeners? “That balance was one of the most important parts of the creative process. Our foundation has always been harmony, melody, emotion, and storytelling. Those elements are at the heart of classic R&B, and we did not want to lose them. At the same time, we understood that production, rhythm, vocal arrangement, and listener expectations have changed over the years.“We worked with a fresh approach to the production while staying faithful to what makes Twins recognisable. The music has a modern sonic texture, but the vocal chemistry, romantic atmosphere, and emotional honesty remain true to our roots. We wanted younger listeners to hear something current, while longtime fans could still immediately recognise the essence of who we are,” said the Twins. 6. What is the main message or feeling you want people to get from Amalangabi? “Above all, we want people to feel love, hope, passion, and connection. Amalangabi is about the kind of feeling that stays alive despite time, distance, or life’s challenges. It is a reminder that love can be powerful, healing, and worth celebrating. We also hope the song inspires listeners to reconnect with the things that make them feel alive—whether that is love, family, purpose, music, or their dreams. The flames in the song are not only about romance; they also represent the inner fire that keeps us moving forward,” said the Twins. 7. What can fans expect from the full-length album dropping before the end of the year? “Fans can expect an album that celebrates the journey of Twins while introducing a renewed and evolved sound. There will be songs that speak to love, relationships, resilience, memories, personal growth, and the beauty of starting again. We are creating music that is emotionally rich but also enjoyable, uplifting, and made to be shared. The album will include moments that longtime supporters will appreciate, especially the signature harmonies and R&B influence they associate with us. At the same time, it will feature contemporary sounds and fresh creative choices that reflect where we are now. We want it to feel like a reunion, a celebration, and an introduction all at once,” said the Twins. 8. How has your songwriting and dynamic as a duo evolved since your debut era? “Our songwriting has evolved because we have evolved. When we began, we were writing from the perspective of young artists finding our voices and navigating early dreams, love, and ambition. Today, we write with more experience and a deeper understanding of life. We are more intentional about what we want to say, how we say it, and what we hope listeners will take away from the music.“Our dynamic as a duo has also become stronger. We understand each other more clearly, we respect each other’s strengths, and we have learned the importance of giving one another room to contribute fully. The connection that made us Twins remains, but it is now supported by greater maturity, trust, and creative confidence,” said the Twins. 9. What are you most excited about as you prepare to hit the road for your national tour? “We are most excited about reconnecting with people face-to-face. There is nothing like performing live and sharing the energy of a song with an audience. We are looking forward to seeing longtime fans, meeting a new generation of listeners, and visiting communities across the country.“The national tour is especially meaningful because it allows us to thank the people who kept our music alive. We want every show to feel personal, joyful, and memorable. We are excited to perform the classics people know and love, while also introducing them to Amalangabi and the new music from the upcoming album,” said the Twins. 10. What does this comeback mean to you both as artists and as a group in South African music history? “This comeback means gratitude, responsibility, and renewal. We are grateful to still have an audience that believes in us and remembers what our music meant to them. We also feel a responsibility to honor the legacy we helped build while continuing to grow instead of remaining trapped in the past.“As artists, this is a chance to reclaim our voices and contribute to South African music in a meaningful way once again. As a group, it is a celebration of perseverance and the enduring power of music. We hope our return reminds people that dreams do not expire, creativity has no age limit, and meaningful art can continue to connect generations,” said the Twins. *Further details regarding the album’s release date and the nationwide tour schedule are yet to be announced.
